After reading Jeckles, My Fearless Leader's take on this subject, I had to write on the subject again. Jeckles speculates that the wingers have hijacked Terri Schiavo's case to get at reversing Roe v Wade. At one time I would have scoffed at that notion. I'm not scoffing. He's got a point. What is so frustrating and infuriating about this subject is that opposing sides are so repugnant once they kick it into high. And they've been running in high for more than a week now. On the one hand, it's not enough for the wingers to insist that life is precious and Terri Schiavo should live no matter what. They have to throw in parallels between the crucifixion of Jesus and make statements about Schiavo taking on the appearance of an Auschwitz victim. You've gotta be some kind of desperate for a point marker to make that kind of argument. Then there's the fibbies. I was surprised at first to find myself agreeing with Barney Frank and Debbie Wasserman Schultz. But then along came the self appointed spokesperson for the Liberals on Talk Radio, and the liberal argument went right into appalling. Al Franken was with Joe Scarborough when he not only suggested that wingers want to kill innocent people, but he also launched into an attack on George Bush for wanting to kill black babies. As a matter of fact, Al Franken got specific -- or as specific as Franken ever gets because he has very little grasp of any facts; he just makes it up as he goes along, but he begins with a germ of truth, so he thinks that's good enough. He said that because George W Bush signed the Futility Bill into law in Tesas in 1999, this means George Bush deliberately kills black babies. Now it just so happens that I know about this case, and I posted an entry about it HERE. Al Franken is a despicable liar for many reasons, but in this case he took the case of a 6 month old baby with a list of incurable medical problems, and he twisted it into a) a racial issue, which it was not, and b) another indictment of George Bush because Franken hates Bush. And Franken spews this garbage on public radio waves on a daily basis. Al Franken makes me want to wash. All of this surrounds Terri Schiavo's death, and there's nothing much we can do about it except wash. I'm very very clean these days.

| punditz March 30, 2005 08:33 AM PST I just found out last night that he wrote a book. I believe he now has the idea that he telepathically communicates with people in comas. I don't know that he's said he communicated with Terri, but he did say something about communicating with another woman in a similar situation. I'm going to keep washing. These people are fruitcakes. | ||
| Bi-Valve March 29, 2005 12:22 PM PST You know who creeps me out more than any of the players in this? George Felos. Read his book "Litigation as Spiritual Practice" or just read the reviews of it at Amazon. There are excerpts there too. I belive that not only is he creepy, but a first-rate whack job. Here's a winner. While on a plane he pondered, “I wonder what it would be like to die right now?” and “indulged the thought by imagining the plane starting to lose it trajectory and descend.” The plane did, creating chaos in the cabin as people began to realize the plane was going to crash. “Needless to say, the juxtaposition of my imagined death and the possibility of a real demise heightened for me my different reactions. I assure you, my hubris in assuming that I would meet a life-ending crash with equanimity was not lost on me.” He then goes on to say, “At that instant a clear, distinctly independent and slightly stern voice said to me, ‘Be careful what you think. You are more powerful than you realize.’ In quick succession I was startled, humbled and blessed by God’s admonishment.” And that's mild compared to some of the content of his book. | ||
| punditz March 29, 2005 06:30 AM PST Hey TAB! Actually it's a little lonely, but JS is too frustrating right now. Love your characterization of Franken! And yep - wingers and fibbies. They've both earned the titles. | ||
| tenuous-at-best March 28, 2005 09:43 PM PST Wingers and fibbies. Never heard you use wingers before - I like it. Fair and balanced as they say. I know much about Franken's political commentary career other than he exceptionally smarmy, and not exceptionally intelligent. Plain hard to look at, like one of those dancing gratefull dead bears you see on the back windows of cars. Except Frankin adds in a little kowala bear insistent lip liplicking this as if he is in the perpetuate state of sipping water. how you like it over here? | ||
| Cattrin March 27, 2005 06:04 AM PST I could not agree with you more. This issue is driving me insane! Even the beating of a vegetative human heart becomes the heaviest political issue I've seen in, well, a very long time. This is no linger about a woman's life, it seems. It'a about who's the stronger politician and the filthiest rat. I think that prolonging her life is actually prolonging her painful death. However, I don't believe the issue is if they let here live or let her die, it should be how she dies. Either she'll bleed to death in a painful vegetative state or she starve to death. Politicians should be talking about a different solution to paitents in such a state as her, not about if Bush is a racist baby killer. | ||
| jayrockstone March 26, 2005 09:01 AM PST I`ve written a similar opinion in a recent post. I try to stay centered, but lean much more right these days because of creeps like Al Franken and Michael Moore. It bothers me to see both sides politicize the sad case of Ms. Schiavo. People need to realize that not everything is a political issue. | ||
| dotbar March 26, 2005 07:54 AM PST The thing I find horrifying is that we really have no idea what Terri actually wants. I can't say I would be jumping for joy if she suddenly sat up and said "Let me die already" but at least we would know. (Even if she did say she wouldn't want to be kept alive if on life support, people do change their minds many times when confronted with reality.) I just read a news clip saying she was now bleeding from her tongue and eyes. This is not a neat and tidy death but a gruesome barbaric event in the making. | ||
